In order for the chain to have zero deflection, it is necessary that the position of the supporting planes of the protrusions and forks relative to the outer surface of the axes 10-13 is accurate. Precision machining, on the one hand, deformation and wear, on the other hand, can lead to more or less significant bending in the opposite direction of the chain. To avoid this, the circuit is equipped with a regulating device (Fig. 5). This device consists of an adjusting thrust screw or other adjusting stop l4 mounted on the end of each bracket 7 and whose head interacts with the end surface of the adjacent bracket. This stop, accepting the compression forces existing in the outer part of the chain, replaces or supplements the action of the corresponding fork 8 located between two asterisks 3. The handrail works as follows. When the sprockets 3 are turned on, the chain 2 is moved with the handles 1. In this case, the supporting surfaces of the projections 8 and forks 9 of the brackets 7 are in a plane punitive to the axles 10-13, forming a rigid link with the supporting link 6, which is carried by the bracket 7. Thus, each adjacent link can freely rotate in the direction equipped with brackets 7. Consequently, the chain has only one possible direction of bending and can freely sweep over an asterisk 3 of small diameter, while its rigidity, opposed to the force perpendicular to the plane of the axes of the links, is provided by brackets (Fig. 2). Since the chain rests on two asterisks 3j, the force is sensed by the projections and forks of all the brackets which rest on the axis of the links between the asterisks. At the level of a single sprocket, the protrusions and forks do not interact with the axles, and the brackets rest on this sprocket through the axles that are in contact with the sprocket.
Thus, the handrail has a large load capacity and, despite a large number of chain links, is simple to manufacture, since it consists of a normal normalized circuit.
A chain with a single bending direction can also be used not only on the handrail, but also in numerous and diverse devices. For example, it can serve as a conveyor for goods or baggage or as a passenger conveyor; for this, the brackets 7 support the elements that form the working surface of the conveyor or conveyor, such as, for example, connecting covers C, forming a continuous linear surface.
